Law Libraries and Librarians

Social networking for law librarians and friends of law libraries

This is a complement to or extension of Connie Crosby's thread on "Facebook - Who's Using It" where we've been discussing individual librarian and general library uses for Facebook.

Jennifer Behrens recent posted on our Blog a list of 20 law libraries with institutional profiles on Facebook:

I've been looking through to see how these libraries are generally using Facebook. I've seen some commonalities - links to WorldCat, JSTOR, LibraryThing, reference librarian contacts, new acquisitions lists, etc. And institutional profiles enable users and friends to "become a fan" of the library. If you have a library profile on Facebook, what are some best practices you've noted or are implementing? What are you hoping to achieve with the library Facebook page?

Thanks!
Lyo.

From some of the recent additions to law library Facebook pages, I'd like to add the following Web 2.0 tools to what's on these pages: SimplyRSS, del.icio.us bookmarks. Also Bookshare Books. And the list of law libraries on Facebook keeps growing! Close to 40 now!:

Ciao,
Lyo.
I wish I could get SimplyRSS to work on the UB Law Library page. It doesn't display anything. I'm using BlogRSS, but it has to be updated manually.

Has anybody else found a way to display a Twitter feed on your library's Facebook page?

Ciao,
Lyo.
Is the problem that you tried the Twitter app and it's not displaying or only showing your personal Tweets? Or is it that you can't find an app that is able to be added to the UB page?
I can't get that Twitter app to add the UBLawLib feed--it pulls in my personal feed instead. Not to mention that it doesn't appear on the UB Law Library Facebook page anyway, even after I add it. It looks like yet another app that's supposed to work with pages, but doesn't.

I had that same problem with the del.icio.us application...it kept taking my personal feed instead of the library one, even after I removed the del.icio.us app from my personal profile. I decided that I was not willing to take one for the team in this instance and delete my del.icio.us account, so no del.icio.us application for either me or my library.

I don't know why app developers are having so much trouble creating Page-ready applications.
I've just added a few more libraries to the list (http://tinyurl.com/5e2rpf). As always, please email me directly if you have a page that isn't listed-- sometimes it can take a while for new pages to appear in Facebook search results.

Has any other library taken advantage of Facebook's new username option for pages? As of last night, pages with more than 100 fans can create a custom (but permanent!!) username to more easily direct users to their page. For example, we're now http://www.facebook.com/dukelawlibrary, instead of http://duke.facebook.com/profile.php?id=7739830819.

If you're eligible and interested, check out the AllFacebook.com blog post at http://www.allfacebook.com/2009/06/pages-username-landrush/ and change your username at http://www.facebook.com/username.
