Growing Participation in Social Networking Technologies - Some Numbers - Updated as of 11 August 2008

I decided to take a count. Here's what I came up with:

On Facebook:

American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Members on Facebook
288

OBS-SIS: Online Bibliographic Services Special Interest Section of AALL (the first AALL SIS on Facebook!)
43

CS-SIS: Computing Services Special Interest Section of AALL
72

Academic Law Libraries
110

Law Librarians
195

teknoids (includes CS-SIS members)
36

Unofficial ALLUNY (AALL Chapter)
19

Shadow and James Show (Jim Milles)
126

Check This Out! Podcast Fan Club (Jim Milles)
103

http://lawlibraries.ning.com/profiles/blog/show?id=2096787%3ABlogPo...

AALLc (Asian American Law Librarians Caucus)
23

AALL Latino Caucus
12

British and Irish Association of Law Librarians (BIALL) Members
105

UK Law Librarians For Publishers' RSS Feeds
27

On Ning:

Law Libraries and Librarians Ning Network
Social networking for law librarians and friends of law libraries
http://lawlibraries.ning.com/
301

(there are also sub-groups on this network for LLOPS, Second Life Law Librarians, Court Librarians, Bloggers, Information Literacy in Law, Gen X/Gen Y Caucus, Consultants & Freelancers; also separate Ning groups for ALLUNY, SFALL, Federal Law Libraries Caucus)

On MySpace:

There were two law libraries there last time I checked - U of Baltimore and Nova Southeastern.

On LinkedIn:

Law Librarians LinkedIn Group
http://lawlibraries.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=2096787%3ATopic%3A...
http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/114791/3AE4CD069A7B

Law librarians across the globe (working in law firms, law schools, corporate
legal departments, courts, legislatures, agencies, government institutions,
and any other legal-related institutions) who are willing to network with
other law librarians and prospective law librarians
319 members and growing

Law-Lib (U.S.-based electronic discussion group with a LinkedIn profile)
184

American Association of Law Libraries (AALL)
(my membership is pending, so I have no idea how many members it has)

Teknoids
(ditto)

In terms of individual law librarians, a search for law librarian yielded over 500 results. Though not precise (it looks for any instances where "law" and "librarian" shows up), pretty good sign!

It's all quite exciting! :-)

It's great to see so many law librarians connecting online. I'm not overwhelmed yet but it could happen...Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, del.icio.us, Ning, Plaxo...

Yep, I think it could get overwhelming. We'll start seeing the avoidance techniques soon...:-) Ning hasn't been as interactive as Facebook and Twitter. I like the ability to immediately contact folks I've friended on Facebook and Ning without having to go look up their e-mail addresses somewhere else. And I've got Google Talk so I can chat with everyone live. And sometimes Twitter can be almost live chat/blogging like. And I do meebo. It's so confusing sometimes! Which do I use when? :-)

Yay, I just got approved to be a member of the LinkedIn Teknoids group and as of today, the number of members in Teknoids is:

19

Hooray! :-)

Hi,
Could provide the link to sign up for the Teknoids group on Linkedin?
Thanks!

Hi Barbara - I'm not sure if this will work, but let's see what happens?:

Teknoids
http://www.linkedin.com/groupInvitation?groupID=152194&sharedKe...
(Elmer Masters is the owner of this group)

American Association of Law Libraries
http://www.linkedin.com/groupInvitation?groupID=112438&sharedKe...

Law-Lib
http://www.linkedin.com/groupInvitation?groupID=154929&sharedKe...

Let me know if it works. Otherwise, perhaps Abbie Mulvihill who owns the Law Librarians group can help?
http://www.linkedin.com/groupInvitation?groupID=114791&sharedKe...

P.S. I also found Nina Platt's group, Strategic Librarians (with related website: http://strategiclibrarian.com/ and http://strategiclibrarian.com/2008/06/29/strategic-librarians-group...):

This is a group for law firm librarians who think strategically or would like to operate in a strategic way, to broaden their knowledge and expertise by sharing ideas and experiences.

Ciao,
Lyo.

There's a "Law Librarians of Second Life" group that has 73 members as of today:

Contact "Anne Idler" in-world to join (or Montserrat Biedermann)

I couldn't see how one could make a link to the teknoids group in LinkedIn, but you can search for "teknoids" and it should show up.

A quick note that the Law Libraries and Librarians Ning network is nearing 400 members! 386 as of today.

You failed to list Law Librarians for McCain/Palin. Why? Is there some liberal academic bias to the list? The group may be small, but all of the members are bona fide genuine real authentic people--no voter fraud here.

Thanks to Google Analytics, I know that millions of librarians visit the site every single day. Why? Diversity of opinion (both far right and very far right), fellowship, and the kind of articles that you will never ever find in the New York Times or Washington Post.

:-) I'll list it in my next update. I stand ready to support diversity in all its forms...:-)

Thank you. Folks want information about change. After eight years of failed Democratic leadership, they are hungry for the kind of change that an aging veteran legislator can bring.

Wow!!!!! So much good information. Thank you so much. I am brand new to Ning, so it is so valuable for me to hear from someone who uses it, as well as many other 2.0 tools, on a regular basis--what works, what doesn't. Thanks for the numbers, too. Good to know.
