Michele, I agree - it's terrifying. It's hard to believe that the population has become so anesthetized by its sugary carbo loaded diet, vapid television, and media access entertainment that it fails to see what is going on here.

I wonder.... whether this financial mess is going to have an unexpected boost for the Obama campaign. The wonks are all saying that because of the multiple failures in recent weeks, foreign investors are sorely needed, and yet are very concerned that the US system is unstable. If McCain is elected, I believe that their concern will increase, foreign investment will ebb, and we'll be worse off. If Obama is elected, foreign investors will feel more optimistic and invest more. By extension, will then our Financial Wonks do what is necessary to effect an Obama victory, if only for a self preservational purpose?
" At least it's pretty to think so."

To Deb (2 posts back). I hope people realize how bad Republican economic policies (which Bill Clinton actually supported in many ways) have been for our country. Of course, McCain is trying to make the campaign about "character" rather than issues. In light of the current economic news I don't know how successful he will be. It seemed like it was working for him last week.

And now Obama's ahead. We have to just keep plugging away at this thing and not get too distracted by polls and such. McCain has shifted his economic viewpoint so many times lately that it's backfiring on him. Good! Maybe it took this downturn to finally wake people up.

I'm glad Obama is being much more cautious than McCain in what he says about the economic crisis. I think this may be due to the Democrats complicity in what has befallen the country. Although Obama wasn't in the Senate at the time, a number of Democrats (including Joe Biden) helped pass the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1999 which repealed much of the Glass-Stegall Act which had imposed government regulation on the banking industry since the 1930s. This has allowed banks to consolidate and create what were touted as "too big to fail" financial giants like Lehman's and Morgan Stanley.
