I find Pennywise the Clown one of the scariest villains ever. Is that just me?

So, so true, Deborah....

This is ANOTHER reason not to roam dark alleys! You might meet a Scarran... ;)

The Wraith and the Scarrans definitely top my list of scariest villains too -- though I also have to give a nod to the Reavers. I would NOT want to meet one of them in a dark alley. Or anywhere else.

Okay, Liz Farrell and I were just discussing who are the scariest Sci-Fi villians, and we both understood that the Wraith and the Scarrans are pretty much awesome. This leads me to believe that I need to join this group...ASAP.

I also must give my voice to Cloud Atlas. David Mitchell is fantastic. My fave authors are Connie Willis, Sheri Tepper, and Robert Heinlein (PRE Stranger -- everything after that was soft-core porn). I also got into the Robert Silverberg Valentine chronicles when I was in college. Man, there are a lot of good SF authors/series(es?).

i really like KSRobinson - i was facinated by the mars trilogy. i was a little tired of the long descriptive narratives by the third installment (green or blue? green i think) but was completely captivated by the first and second books. i don't find his work clunky. i also read rice and salt (really imiginative) and icehenge - which i liked. i want to read the california shores trilogy. btw - he wrote an excellent essay called Imagining Abrupt Climate Change.

I second, third, and fourth Cloud Atlas. I don't really regard it as sci-fi; there are only a couple of sections ("An Orison of Somni-451" and "Sloosh'a's Crossin' an' Everythin' After") that I would regard as sci-fi'ish, but it's an absolutely brilliant, amazing book. In other words, I frakkin' love it. Ghostwritten by David Mitchell is also amazing. Heck, anything he writes is good.

regarding books: anyone here read kim stanley robinson? i kind of like him, even though he's admittedly a rather clunky prose stylist . . .
