Ning is a bit different than other sites because it is a platform for building your *own* social network, with the features you want to see. So, there are any number of Ning sites on various topics. This one that Jim Milles has built is (obviously) about law libraries, but there are many others as well.

I have not yet tried to build my own site, but Jim says they are starting to use it at UB Law to facilitate communication between students, faculty, staff and alumni: http://thinkublaw.ning.com/
