Profile Information

About me:
I'm the foreign and international law librarian at the University of Chicago Law School, D'Angelo Law Library. I am interested in social networking technologies and how they can be incorporated in law libraries. I am generally interested in new and emerging technologies. I co-edit (with Heidi Kuehl and Therese Arado) an AALL CALL chapter newsletter column called "TechBuzz" on the use of emerging technologies in law libraries.

I am very active in "old school" global networks such as the INT-LAW, an email list for group discussions of foreign, comparative, and international legal resources and related questions.

INT-LAW has close to 1000 members, including law librarians, law professors, law students, government documents specialists, government officials, agency staff, IT/computing services folks, database vendors, publishers, information professionals, etc., from all over the world. Subscription information and message archives are here:

http://listserver.ciesin.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=int-law

I compiled "Lyo's Law Lists", a guide to electronic discussion groups related to law, libraries, and law librarianship, from around 1998 until August 15, 2005. An un-updated version of my "Law Lists" guide to law- and library-related email lists is still on the Internet at:

http://www2.lib.uchicago.edu/~llou/lawlists.txt

I am exploring Second Life as the avatar, Montserrat Biedermann, to see if there are foreign, comparative, and international law resources there, and to see if any of our users are there.

I am currently participating in the "Law Librarians in Virtual Worlds" Second Life workshop (see http://vwlawlibrarians.wetpaint.com/).

I am also participating in the AALL Computing Services Special Interest Section (CS-SIS) Web 2.0 Challenge, July 21-August 24, 2008):

http://www.cssis.org/Web20Challenge/

(click on "Web 2.0 Challenge" to enter the course; click on "Log in as guest" to view course materials)

And our library is exploring meebo to chat with users with reference questions.

Montserrat is my social networking persona in most instances...:-)

I'm montserratlj on meebo.

I'm Montserrat Biedermann, montserratlj@gmail.com, on Facebook.

The Law Librarian on Blog Talk Radio (Richard Leiter and Brian Striman's show)

Just listened in to the most recent radio show on "Managing Electronic Titles in Law Libraries" with guests, Yael Mandelstam and Angela Jones providing a technical services perspective. Great stuff! And there's a chat room where listeners can exchange information, links, and ask questions. There were up to 82 listeners today. The shows are archived so you can listen in later:…

LOL! I know-we are all the early adopters! But, I think this is starting to get enough traction we may actually see some of our *other* colleagues join in. Would be nice.

I see you are making progress. No, I am not in SL - didn't make the leap yet. I think I will leave it in a brainstorming stage for just a little longer. :-)
