Becoming a member of the Law Libraries and Librarians Ning network was open until January 2010 when it became a moderated network. This means approval is needed by the network administrators to become a member, but the process is usually pretty fast. Moderation was a spam-prevention measure.
As of today, the Ning has 713 members. The members so far seem to also be members of major
national and international law library and library associations such as IALL, BIALL, AALL, CALL, SLA, etc.
The Ning was created by Jim Milles to facilitated "social networking for law librarians and friends of law
libraries." It's the network for "blogging, podcasting, Twittering, Gtalking, ooVooing, Flickring, networking law
librarians."
Law Libraries and Librarians Ning members can add as much profile information about themselves
as they wish to their pages, as well as their website and blog addresses, and Meeboo, Gmail, Facebook, Ning, Second Life, Plaxo, LinkedIn, Gtalk, Twitter, Flickr, FriendFeed, Yahoo! Messenger, AIM, Skype, YouTube, etc. addresses.
Ning members can also add photos (such as from conferences), videos (workshops, law library tours, etc.), post Forum discussions/messages, blogs, start Groups on specialized areas of law librarianship, by library type, Web 2.0 activity, etc. There are also Notes and Chat features (to be exploited).
So far, there are 20 groups including Information Literacy in Law, the Gen X Gen Y Caucus, Bloggers, Web 2.0 Challenge 2009, Second Life Law Librarians, Court Librarians, Sci-Fi Law Librarians, Ordainers of the Universe
(catalogers/technical services), Law Librarians in Florida, and Texas Law Librarians:
